WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Thursday, June 5, Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA) achieved a significant milestone with two bills he authored passing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The legislation focuses on dismantling Mexican drug cartels and advocating for Taiwan’s participation in the International Monetary Fund (IMF), marking an important moment in McCormick’s legislative efforts.
“I will always work to protect the economic and national security interests of Pennsylvanians,” McCormick stated. “These bills will strengthen our national security, stop the scourge of fentanyl from coming into American communities, and counter China’s pernicious influence.”
The first bill, S. 1780, known as the Mexico Security Assistance Accountability Act, was introduced on May 15 alongside Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ). It mandates the State Department to outline a strategy to dismantle Mexican drug cartels, enhance Mexico’s military and public security institutions, and tackle corruption. Senator McCormick emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue, citing the role of cartels in the fentanyl crisis, which has claimed over 300,000 American lives, including more than 4,000 Pennsylvanians annually.
The second bill, S. 1900, the Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act, was presented on May 22 in collaboration with a bipartisan group of Senators, including Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI). This bill directs the U.S. Governor of the IMF to advocate for Taiwan’s inclusion as a member, should Taiwan seek admission. Taiwan, the 21st largest global economy and a key U.S. trading partner, remains excluded from the 191-member IMF despite its economic significance.
McCormick’s legislative efforts address critical national and global challenges, focusing on public safety, international partnerships, and countering economic and geopolitical threats. The advancement of these bills reflects bipartisan coordination to safeguard security and economic interests.
As the legislation proceeds through the Senate, McCormick expressed his commitment to working with colleagues to carry these efforts forward, citing their importance to Pennsylvanians and the broader national interest.
