EAST MARLBOROUGH TWP, PA — Kennett Square Veterinary Hospital is seeking township approval to double its permitted number of veterinarians and expand operating hours at its North Mill Road facility, potentially increasing veterinary service capacity under zoning restrictions established more than two decades ago.

The East Marlborough Township Zoning Hearing Board will consider the application Tuesday, October 27, at 7 p.m. The proposed expansion has not been approved.

Green Is Gold Properties LLC, which owns the approximately 10-acre property at 619 North Mill Road, and Kennett Square Veterinary Practice PC, which operates as Kennett Square Veterinary Hospital, are requesting a special exception to expand the existing veterinary use.

The application would increase the permitted number of veterinarians from two to four, modifying a restriction imposed through a 2005 conditional-use approval by the township’s Board of Supervisors.

The applicants also seek permission to operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

Supervised outdoor animal walks would be permitted from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., extending the period during which animals could be taken outside the building.

The proposed changes would expand the hospital’s authorized staffing capacity and operating schedule without requiring approval for an entirely new veterinary use at the property.

The site is located in East Marlborough’s AP Agricultural Preservation District and contains an existing veterinary clinic building, kennel and accessory dwelling unit.

Because the property operates under a conditional-use approval that limits the number of veterinarians, the applicants must obtain additional zoning authorization before implementing the proposed expansion.

The request is being submitted under Section 450-1901.B of the township’s zoning ordinance, which governs the extension or enlargement of existing uses.

The Zoning Hearing Board will consider whether the proposed expansion satisfies the applicable special-exception requirements, including any additional zoning relief necessary for the requested changes.

The application would alter both the scale and scheduling of veterinary operations, potentially increasing activity at the property during weekday evenings and Saturdays.

The hearing will take place at the East Marlborough Township Building, 721 Unionville Road, Kennett Square, PA.

Residents and other interested parties may attend and provide testimony before the Zoning Hearing Board.

Individuals requiring disability accommodations or auxiliary services may contact the township manager at 610-444-0725.

The board’s consideration of the application will determine whether Kennett Square Veterinary Hospital can expand beyond the operating restrictions established in 2005.
