KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Kennett Square Borough recently announced it has been awarded a state grant of over half a million dollars. The funds will be used to replace the community’s 70-year-old water treatment plant, a crucial infrastructure that currently serves as the borough’s single source of clean water.

The news was warmly welcomed by Borough Council President Doug Doerfler, who emphasized the importance of such investment in public infrastructure. “Our water treatment facility serves nearly 6,000 borough residents, along with residents in Kennett and East Marlborough townships,” he said. “We are extremely grateful to Sen. John Kane and Rep. Christina Sappey for helping us secure this grant.”

Currently situated in a floodplain and equipped with aging machinery, the existing water treatment plant has raised concerns about its ability to continue delivering clean water to the community. The decision to preemptively replace the facility is seen as the most effective way to maintain an adequate water supply and keep rates controlled.

The $551,000 state grant comes from the COVID-19 ARPA H20 PA program and will supplement an existing $500,000 award from the Chester County ARPA grant program. These combined funds will enable the construction of a new water treatment plant, equipped with state-of-the-art filtration and control systems.

Among the planned upgrades are new filters, chemical tanks, electrical and control equipment, greensand filters, and other crucial systems. The result will be a modern, efficient plant capable of providing a higher quality of water than the current facility.

Senator John I. Kane expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The Kennett community should not have to worry about the state of its water. This grant award is a testament to our shared commitment to improving the quality of life in our district.”

Echoing this sentiment, Representative Christina Sappey highlighted the importance of reliable and safe water infrastructure. “A great number of people will benefit from this project now, and in the generations to come,” she said.

With the funding secured, Kennett Square Borough looks forward to making significant strides in its commitment to providing safe, clean water for all its residents. The project signals a brighter, more secure future for the community’s water supply.
