Chester County Eateries Flagged for Food Safety Violations in Surprise Inspections

Chester County Health Department

WEST CHESTER, PA — Several popular Chester County restaurants and grocery chains were cited this week for food safety violations following routine inspections by the Chester County Health Department, revealing issues ranging from improper food storage and sanitation to equipment disrepair and unsafe temperatures.

According to reports dated November 10, 2025, inspectors identified multiple violations at Tasty Table Catering in Berwyn, Giant Food Store in Exton, McDonald’s in West Whiteland, and Pizza Peddler in Westtown. While most violations were classified as correctable, inspectors noted repeated lapses in basic food safety practices and maintenance that could heighten the risk of contamination if left unaddressed.

At Tasty Table Catering on Leopard Road in Berwyn, inspectors recorded 13 violations, including a lack of sanitizer test strips, improper use of a three-compartment sink for food preparation, and heavily rusted storage racks in walk-in refrigerators. Food was found stored directly on the floor of a freezer, and several repackaged deli meats lacked date markings. The report also cited leaking plumbing, a turned-off prep sink, unlabeled chemical spray bottles, and peeling ceiling tiles in the dishwashing area. The inspector concluded that the “Person in Charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety,” urging staff retraining and immediate corrective action.

At Giant Food Store #6051 in Exton, inspectors found hot foods, including fried chicken, held at 109°F—well below the required 135°F for safety—and cut kale and spinach stored above 46°F. All temperature-compromised foods were discarded on-site. Inspectors also cited unclean surfaces, debris buildup beneath a nonfunctional dishwasher, and grime along floor junctures and walk-in cooler fans.

At McDonald’s #4297 in West Whiteland, one worker was observed handling ready-to-eat fries with bare hands, prompting immediate disposal and staff retraining. Other violations included multiple coolers in disrepair, leaks beneath the three-compartment sink, and clean utensils stacked while still wet, which can promote bacterial growth.

At Pizza Peddler in the Westtown Shopping Center, inspectors cited 12 violations, including cracked food containers, missing labels on squeeze bottles, and sanitizer mixed with dish detergent. Meatballs were found at 108°F in a holding unit that was not yet up to temperature. Inspectors also found that the high-temperature dishwasher failed to reach the required 160°F sanitizing level, forcing the facility to revert temporarily to manual washing until repairs are made.

Health officials said none of the facilities were ordered to close, but each was required to correct violations and provide proof of compliance. Routine re-inspections are expected to ensure ongoing adherence to Chester County food safety regulations.
