WEST CHESTER, PA — West Chester Cooperative opened a community-owned grocery store Aug. 21 in downtown West Chester, giving borough residents a walkable food-shopping option while creating a permanent retail outlet for local and regional producers after more than a decade of organizing.
The 2,800-square-foot store at 204 W. Market St., across from the Chester County Justice Center, is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week. Shopping is open to the public and does not require membership.
The opening puts the cooperative model to a practical test in a downtown that has gone decades without a traditional supermarket. The co-op enters operation with 845 member-owners following years of fundraising, pop-up markets and development work.
The store currently employs one full-time and 11 part-time workers.
West Chester Cooperative is positioning locally produced food as a central part of its business model, stocking goods from farms, bakeries, beverage makers and other producers in Chester County and the surrounding region.
Among the closest suppliers are several West Chester businesses, including Unruly Nature, Sneaky Brew, Poppy Ski’s Pierogi, Mindfully Mina’s, Golden Valley Roasters and The Jawnery Bakery. Other Chester County vendors include Vera Pasta, Bailys Dairy, Chaikhana Chai, Good Girls Bakery, Baba’s Brew and Swarmbustin’ Honey.
Produce suppliers include Bryn Clovis Farm in Malvern, about nine miles from the store, and Lancaster County-based Paradise Organics and Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative. The store also sources from Four Seasons Produce in Ephrata.
The supplier strategy gives small producers another route to consumers while concentrating products from numerous businesses in a single downtown location. The co-op says its local sourcing generally encompasses producers within about 100 miles.
The location is next to a parking garage and bus terminal, giving the market access for pedestrians, motorists and transit riders. The cooperative also lists curbside pickup among its planned customer conveniences.
Unlike a conventional privately owned grocery business, the cooperative is owned by members who buy into the organization. Membership is available to shoppers, though customers do not have to join to purchase groceries.
The store’s opening follows a lengthy effort to establish a full-service grocery operation in the borough, shifting the organization from fundraising and temporary markets into day-to-day retail operations.
That transition also changes the central challenge facing the cooperative. After years devoted to getting the store open, its ability to maintain sales, support its local sourcing strategy and attract both members and nonmembers will determine whether community ownership can provide a durable grocery option in downtown West Chester.
