The Institutes Appoint Insurance CEOs to Lead Board of Trustees

The Institutes

MALVERN, PA — The Institutes has appointed Gen Re President and Chief Executive Officer Kara Raiguel as chair of its Board of Trustees, alongside new vice chairs John J. Marchioni of Selective Insurance Group and Susan Rivera of Tokio Marine HCC, placing three insurance industry executives in key governance roles for the nonprofit education organization.

The appointments position the executives to help guide The Institutes’ strategy as the organization provides education, research and professional development programs for the risk management and insurance industry.

Peter L. Miller, chief executive officer of The Institutes, said the executives’ experience leading major insurance organizations will help shape the organization’s future direction.

“Their strategic guidance will help shape where The Institutes go next and strengthen how we educate, elevate, and connect those interested in risk management and insurance,” Miller said.

Raiguel joined Gen Re in 2016 after 16 years with Berkshire Hathaway’s Reinsurance Division, where she worked on reinsurance opportunities, loss portfolio transfers and acquisitions. She said reinsurers are confronting increasingly complex risks that require skilled professionals.

“Making sound decisions amid that volatility requires deep expertise and The Institutes play an essential role in preparing the professionals and leaders our profession depends on,” Raiguel said.

Marchioni, who has spent nearly three decades at Selective Insurance Group, became the company’s president and chief executive officer in 2020 and assumed the additional role of chairman in 2022. He said workforce changes and evolving demands on risk management professionals underscore the need for industry education.

Rivera has served as chief executive officer of Tokio Marine HCC since 2018 after previously holding executive leadership roles at the company and other specialty insurance firms. She said technical expertise and talent development remain critical to the specialty insurance sector.

The Institutes also recognized outgoing board leaders W. Robert Berkley Jr., president and chief executive officer of W. R. Berkley Corporation, who served as board chair, and John C. “Jack” Roche, president and chief executive officer of The Hanover Insurance Group, who served as vice chair. Miller credited both executives with helping strengthen the organization during their terms.
