MALVERN, PA — The Transportation Management Association of Chester County is rolling out a fully integrated digital fare collection system for ChescoBus, marking a shift toward cashless, data-driven transit operations. The new platform, launched in partnership with mobility technology firm Modeshift, went live on November 10, 2025.
The system will allow riders to plan, purchase, and manage trips using a smartphone app or reloadable smart card, replacing paper tickets and reducing reliance on cash. TMACC officials said the upgrade is aimed at improving convenience for riders while streamlining back-end operations.
Modeshift’s account-based fare collection technology provides real-time data insights and speeds up boarding by enabling contactless payments. TMACC noted that the new smart cards will include Spanish-language accessibility to support more equitable service across its routes.
“This partnership marks an exciting step toward modernizing our ChescoBus operations,” said Tim Phelps, executive director of TMACC. He said the platform will simplify travel for SCCOOT and Coatesville Link riders while improving operational efficiency.
The system includes mobile ticketing via TMACC’s free app on iOS and Android, reloadable smart cards for riders without mobile devices, and an online portal that allows users to reload passes, plan trips, and manage accounts. Personalized “Smart Pay” profiles will let riders track routes and transactions.
For TMACC, the data generated through the platform will support route adjustments and long-term service planning. Company officials said the real-time analytics will help the agency better match resources to rider demand.
“With TMACC joining our growing network of Pennsylvania transit partners, we’re proud to help Chester County advance its mission of delivering safe, sustainable and inclusive mobility,” said Miroslav Katsarov, CEO of Modeshift. He emphasized that the platform is built to help agencies modernize quickly while offering a more consistent user experience.
ChescoBus is now the 11th transit authority in Pennsylvania to adopt Modeshift’s fare collection technology, part of a wider trend toward digital mobility tools across the state’s public transit systems.
