WEST CHESTER, PA — A weekend filled with independent bookstores, conversations with authors, and plenty of time to curl up with a good book is coming to West Chester, offering readers an opportunity to turn their love of literature into a shared getaway.
The inaugural Future Famous Authors Bookish Retreat will take place Nov. 20–22, bringing book enthusiasts together for three days of literary activities, bookstore visits, author discussions, and opportunities to connect with fellow readers.
Organized by Massachusetts-based novelist JB Harris, founder of Future Famous Authors, the retreat will showcase West Chester’s independent bookstores and distinctive accommodations while introducing participants to three writers, including two with Philadelphia-area connections.
Unlike traditional writing retreats, which often focus on helping aspiring authors develop their craft, this event is designed primarily for people who enjoy reading.
“I wanted to create the kind of weekend I would love to attend myself,” Harris said. “I’ve been to writing retreats but never a readers’ retreat. A weekend in a bookish hotel, visiting bookstores, and doing bookish things sounded like the perfect weekend getaway to me.”
The featured authors include Harris, who wrote The Immigrant’s Wife; Kris Schaale, author of The Summer of Meteors; and Sherry Knowlton, co-author of American Roulette.
Participants will have opportunities to meet the writers, discuss books, and attend an author panel dinner during the weekend.
A central part of the experience will be visits to three independent bookstores: Baldwin’s Book Barn, Bookmarks and Leaves, and Lore.
At Baldwin’s Book Barn, guests will explore a literary destination known for its historic character and extensive collection of books. Bookmarks and Leaves and Lore will also welcome retreat participants, with each store arranging special experiences for the group.
The bookstore visits are intended to introduce readers to new titles while highlighting the independent businesses that contribute to West Chester’s literary community.
The retreat will also give participants opportunities to explore the borough’s downtown shops, restaurants, and other attractions.
For accommodations, guests can stay at the Book House Hotel, a literary-themed boutique hotel that complements the weekend’s focus on books and reading. Additional lodging is available at Hotel Indigo in downtown West Chester.
Neither hotel is sponsoring the retreat.
Harris designed the event to be welcoming to individual readers rather than requiring participants to belong to an established book club.
While some readers’ retreats grow out of existing groups, the Future Famous Authors gathering is open to people who may arrive as strangers but share an enthusiasm for literature.
The schedule will combine organized activities, shared meals and bookstore excursions with opportunities for informal conversations and independent reading.
“This was the next logical step in a movement designed to introduce readers to the best books they haven’t heard of yet, while expanding the reach of lesser known but very talented authors,” Harris said.
The approach reflects the broader mission of Future Famous Authors, which Harris established to help readers discover writers who may not receive widespread publicity.
By bringing authors and readers together in a smaller setting, the organization hopes to create opportunities for meaningful conversations and lasting connections.
For West Chester, the retreat will also draw attention to the borough’s independent bookstores and hospitality businesses, introducing visitors to the area’s literary attractions.

The retreat offers a different approach to literary gatherings by placing readers at the center of the experience.
Rather than concentrating on lectures or writing workshops, the weekend encourages participants to explore bookstores, discover unfamiliar authors, share recommendations, and spend time with others who appreciate the pleasures of reading.
For those who enjoy browsing bookstore shelves, discussing memorable characters or finding their next favorite novel, the Future Famous Authors Bookish Retreat offers a chance to experience West Chester through a literary lens.
With registration closing Nov. 1 and participation limited, interested readers are encouraged to review the retreat details and reserve their places ahead of the November gathering.
