PHOENIXVILLE, PA — Fans of classic comedy will have a rare opportunity to enjoy timeless Laurel and Hardy films on the big screen this summer, as the Sons of the Desert appreciation society brings a special program to Phoenixville’s historic Colonial Theatre on Saturday, August 9.
The event, presented by the local tents “Their First Mistake” of Downingtown and “Two Tars” of Philadelphia, will begin at 11 a.m. and feature the beloved 1933 feature film Sons of the Desert, alongside the Academy Award-winning short The Music Box. In The Music Box, Laurel and Hardy famously struggle to deliver a piano up a comically long set of stairs, a sequence that remains one of their most celebrated routines.
Founded 60 years ago with the blessing of Stan Laurel himself, the Sons of the Desert is an international society dedicated to celebrating the enduring work of Laurel and Hardy. Rather than operate as a traditional fan club, the group focuses on keeping the comedy duo’s legacy alive for new generations, boasting over 100 chapters worldwide, each named after a Laurel and Hardy film.
“This is a great opportunity for kids to enjoy a type of humor that is innocent and timeless, and a classic alternative to what passes for comedy on social media these days,” said Bill Roth, “Sheik” of the Downingtown tent, Their First Mistake.
The Colonial Theatre, located at 227 Bridge Street in Phoenixville, provides an appropriately historic setting for the event, inviting audiences of all ages to experience slapstick comedy in its original cinematic form.
Through this screening, local members of the Sons of the Desert aim to introduce Laurel and Hardy’s masterful humor to new audiences while offering longtime fans a chance to relive the joy of these cherished classics on the big screen.
