HARRISBURG, PA — The Office of Commonwealth Libraries (OCL), part of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, recently unveiled its selection for the 2024 Pennsylvania One Book early literacy program. “Slug in Love,” a heartwarming children’s book written by Rachel Bright and illustrated by Nadia Shireen, is set to take center stage.

“Slug in Love” tells an endearing story of Doug the Slug, who embarks on a quest for a hug. The lively and expressive illustrations are ideal for young readers, and the book’s central message of self-acceptance and emotional expression aligns perfectly with the PA One Book mission of fostering a love for reading from an early age.

Secretary of Education Dr. Khalid N. Mumin expressed his excitement about the selection, stating, “Getting young children excited about reading is one of the best ways we can encourage them to become lifelong learners engaged with the world around them.” He added that Doug the Slug’s journey of discovery would teach readers about self-love and empathy towards others.

Now in its 19th consecutive year, the PA One Book initiative focuses on nurturing early literacy habits among preschoolers, their families, and caregivers. The program extends beyond just reading, promoting family engagement through books and offering activities designed to develop key language, literacy, and social skills.

Susan Banks, Deputy Secretary for the Office of Commonwealth Libraries and State Librarian, shared her pride in leading the PA One Book Program alongside colleagues and partners across the state. She highlighted the program’s nearly two-decade-long tradition of connecting children and their families with Pennsylvania authors and emphasized the role of early literacy in the success of the Commonwealth.

The OCL will provide copies of “Slug in Love” to public libraries and certified early childhood education programs across Pennsylvania in early 2024. Pennsylvanians are encouraged to visit their local public libraries to check out this year’s title, along with previous PA One Book titles. There will also be special story time events and other preschooler-friendly activities related to the book this spring.

The PA One Book early literacy project is a collaborative effort involving several organizations, including PDE, OCL, the Office of Child Development and Early Learning, and others. It is funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by OCL, with additional funding provided by OCDEL.
