EXTON, PA — A World War II veteran’s journey through combat, captivity, and survival will take center stage in Exton this month as an author shares the deeply personal family history behind a book written to preserve one soldier’s experiences for future generations.

Author Michael D. Melillo will visit Barnes & Noble in Exton on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. for a free book signing featuring What the River Kept, a story inspired by the wartime experiences of Joseph Paul “Pop” Janscak, the grandfather of Melillo’s wife.

The book follows Janscak’s experiences during World War II, including the hardships of combat, captivity, and survival. Beyond the battlefield, it examines the lasting effects of war on those who served and the families who inherited their stories.

For Melillo, the project represents an effort to preserve a family member’s experiences while connecting younger generations with the human realities behind one of history’s defining conflicts.

Rather than focusing solely on military campaigns and historical events, What the River Kept explores the personal dimensions of wartime service, including the courage required to endure extraordinary circumstances and the memories veterans carried long after returning home.

The story also considers how those experiences continue to influence families decades later, even as firsthand accounts become increasingly rare.

With the number of surviving World War II veterans continuing to decline, efforts to document their experiences have taken on greater significance. Family histories such as Janscak’s offer a way to preserve individual perspectives that might otherwise disappear as generations pass.

The upcoming signing will give Chester County readers an opportunity to meet Melillo, learn about the family history that inspired the book and hear how he transformed Janscak’s experiences into a written account.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to have their copies personally signed.

The event comes less than three weeks before Veterans Day on Nov. 11, offering a timely opportunity to reflect on military service and the importance of preserving the experiences of those who served.
