ROSE VALLEY, PA — In a celebration of its rich history as America’s first repertory theatre, Hedgerow Theatre has announced the return of Willy Russell’s heartwarming one-woman play, ‘Shirley Valentine.’ This delightful production will run in repertory with Enda Walsh’s ‘The New Electric Ballroom’ throughout February, marking a fitting encore to the theatre’s centennial year.

‘Shirley Valentine’ and ‘The New Electric Ballroom’ are seen as two facets of the same gem, both exploring the vast potential of life. These companion pieces promise an engaging and thought-provoking theatre experience for all attendees.

A Heartwarming Tale of Self-Discovery

‘Shirley Valentine’ brings to life the story of Shirley Valentine-Bradshaw, an ostensibly ordinary English housewife whose depth and complexity are often overlooked. As she prepares a simple meal of ‘chips and eggs,’ Shirley reflects on her life, her relationships, and her dreams, while considering a surprise adventure in Greece.

A Stellar Performance

Susan Wefel, a seasoned artist with 44 years at Hedgerow Theatre, reprises her role as Shirley. Wefel’s portrayal of Shirley has been lauded for its authenticity and depth, capturing the essence of the ‘Everywoman’ in a character that is anything but ordinary.

“Whether you’ve seen a previous incarnation at Hedgerow or are taking her in for the first time, Susie’s Shirley will delight,” says Marcie Bramucci, Hedgerow’s Executive Artistic Director.

A Reunion of Collaborators

Directing this production is Micki Sharpe, who returns to collaborate with Wefel after the successful debut of ‘Shirley Valentine’ at Hedgerow in 2010. Sharpe’s direction brings out the play’s intimate charm and Shirley Valentine’s journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
