ELKTON, MDCecil College‘s Art and Design program is set to host an exciting series of art exhibitions this fall, showcasing a diverse range of artistic expressions at the Milburn Stone Gallery and the Elkton Station Gallery.

The season begins with the “Alumni Spotlight: Mary Jo Fitz” exhibition, running from Friday, August 16, through Tuesday, September 24, at the Elkton Station Gallery. An event reception will be held on Friday, September 6, from 5-8 p.m., coinciding with the First Friday Art Loop in Elkton. Fitz’s work in ceramics and pottery aims to capture the subtleties of human experience. “We live in a loud world, loud and fast, where feelings, thoughts, and ideas are scattered, swept away, and lost. If art is expression, communication, and connection, it is the artist who stands in the mist, listening for whispers among the echoes,” said Fitz. Her pieces seek to amplify these whispers, encouraging reflection and conversation.

Next, “Retratos Boulenc—Boulenc Portraits” will be displayed at the Milburn Stone Gallery on the North East Campus from September 6 to October 18, with a reception on Friday, September 20, from 6-8 p.m. This exhibition, celebrating Spanish Heritage Month, features black-and-white portraits of bakers, cooks, wait staff, and dishwashers from Boulenc, a renowned bakery-restaurant in Oaxaca, Mexico. The series of photographs, developed over several years, captures the natural intimacy between the photographer and the workers, providing a poignant glimpse into their daily lives.

The final exhibition, “Amber Waves of Grain” by Robert Ludwig, opens with a reception on Friday, October 4, from 5-8 p.m. at the Elkton Station Gallery and runs through November 20. Ludwig’s collection of color and black-and-white photographs highlights the stages of growth and decline in wheat and tobacco crops, offering intricate images that reveal the dramatic color contrasts and textural variations often missed from a passing vehicle.
