PHILADELPHIA, PA — The InLiquid Gallery will present its first exhibit of the new year, “beLONGING”, a part of the citywide project (re)FOCUS. This interactive exhibition, marking the 50th anniversary of FOCUS in 1974, showcases the stunning artistry and personal narratives of four local LGBTQIA+ artists – Carmel Dor, THECOLORG, Abbey Muza, and Meg Wolensky.

“beLONGING” delves into the profound questions of personal identity and self-realization. It invites visitors to explore these themes through an array of artistic mediums, from life-sized stuffed teddy bears adorned with rainbow-colored QR codes to intricately woven textiles, vibrant oil paintings, and thought-provoking sculptures. Each piece crafted by these talented artists aims to unravel the complexities of identity, drawing on their personal experiences and unique perspectives.

Each artist brings a distinct voice and artistic style to the exhibition. Abbey Muza uses weaving as a medium for image-making centered on queer identity and sensuality. Meg Wolensky turns to oil painting as a healing practice, exploring her queer identity and the impact of trauma. Carmel Dor’s work intersects queer theories of identity with the Jewish Diaspora and Israeli nationality through painting, drawing, zine-making, and sculpture. Lastly, THECOLORG brings comforting childhood memories to life through her playful site-specific installations of soft sculpture and plush.

In addition to viewing the artwork, visitors are encouraged to engage in self-exploration through an interactive zine-making station. Zines, small handmade publications or art books, have been a significant part of self-expression and cataloging experiences within the LGBTQIA+ communities. Visitors can create their own zines using materials provided by the artists and delve into a pop-up reading room filled with books and zines that echo the themes present in the exhibition.
