All Aboard the Brandywine Railroad: Unveiling Holiday Magic at the Brandywine Museum of Art

CHADDS FORD, PA — The enchanting holiday season is set to return to the Brandywine Museum of Art, with the beloved Brandywine Railroad chugging back into the station on November 18, 2023. This cherished holiday tradition has enthralled museum visitors for over half a century and promises another season of joy and wonder.

The Brandywine Railroad, an iconic O-gauge model train display, will be on view until January 7, 2024. With more than 1,000 pieces, including locomotives, passenger and freight trains, and trolleys, the exhibit is a sight to behold. The trains traverse 2,000 feet of track, passing through a quaint village, a farm, factories, a drive-in movie theater, and even a bustling carnival. Interactive elements operated by buttons and foot pedals allow visitors to engage directly with the display.

In addition to the railroad, the museum will house a Victorian dollhouse showcasing eleven rooms filled with hundreds of miniature objects that are sure to captivate visitors of all ages.

The holiday season at the museum also brings the vibrant and engaging works featured in ‘Rooted: Family and Nature in Contemporary Children’s Book Illustration.‘ On display until February 28, 2024, this special exhibition explores the enduring bonds of family and nature through more than 75 original artworks. The artists represented include Micha Archer, Sophie Blackall, Cozbi A. Cabrera, Joe Cepeda, Devon Holzwarth, Juana Martinez-Neal, Frank Morrison, and Qing Zhuang.

Furthermore, the museum will unveil ‘Abstract Flash: Unseen Andrew Wyeth,’ featuring 37 never-before-seen watercolors that highlight Wyeth’s surprising interest in abstract art and its influence on his own practice.

To add a touch of festive whimsy, the museum’s atrium will be adorned with the Brandywine’s unique Critter ornaments, handcrafted by dedicated volunteers using natural materials. The annual Holiday Critter Sale will take place at the nearby Chadds Ford Historical Society from November 30 to December 3, 2023.

From November 24, 2023, through January 7, 2024, the museum will be open seven days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., to accommodate extended holiday hours.
