WEST CHESTER, PA — Three local students are preparing for college this fall with the help of scholarships through the Gawthrop Greenwood Law Prize.

Gawthrop Greenwood, PC has been encouraging, recognizing and honoring academic excellence since the law firm’s founding in 1904. Created in 1991, the Gawthrop Greenwood Law Prize ensures the advancement and education of Chester County’s youth by awarding a student from each of the three high schools in the West Chester Area School District. This year’s law prize winners, receiving $1,000 each, are:

  • Elizabeth Prieto – Graduate of West Chester East High School graduate, attending Gettysburg College, studying public policy & women, gender and sexuality
  • Andrew Pruden – Graduate of West Chester B. Reed Henderson High School, attending University of Pittsburgh, studying political science
  • Christopher Watson – Graduate of Bayard Rustin High School graduate, attending Immaculata University, studying cybersecurity

Says award recipient Elizabeth Prieto, “I have been interested in law and advocacy since 3rd grade, when my class partook in a mock trial. With those passions in my heart, this scholarship is especially dear to me… Your scholarship helps me in getting closer to those dreams.”

Each award recipient also received a copy of the book Dear Grad: Words of Wisdom and Encouragement for Your Next Journey. The book grew out of the YouTube “Dear Class of 2020” virtual celebration and provides insight from a diverse group of famous and soon-to-be-famous people across America on building resilience and embracing the possibilities ahead.

“We are extremely proud of our winners of the Gawthrop Greenwood Law Prize,” says Gawthrop Greenwood partner Stacey Fuller, who specializes in education law and is vice president of the West Chester Area Education Foundation. “As these students prepare to depart on this new adventure and the future that lies before them, it is my sincere hope that they embrace the opportunities and meaningful connections that await them.”
