WEST GROVE, PA — Avon Grove School District is extending its Life Skills instruction beyond the classroom through a partnership with the Avondale Fire Station, giving students opportunities to develop communication, independence and social skills in community settings as they prepare for life after graduation.

Students in teacher Eve Melhado’s Life Skills class visited the fire station October 6, continuing a relationship established last year between the district’s special education program and local firefighters.

The visit allowed students to interact directly with first responders, learn about their responsibilities and become familiar with the fire station while practicing skills intended to support greater independence.

The partnership reflects an approach to special education that incorporates community-based experiences alongside classroom instruction, helping students navigate unfamiliar environments and develop relationships outside school.

“This is what Life Skills learning is all about—helping students build the skills and confidence they need not just for success in school, but for meaningful lives in their communities,” said Dr. Mike Ubbens, the district’s supervisor of special education.

Ubbens emphasized that opportunities to interact with community members provide practical experience in communication, participation and relationship-building.

“When our students have opportunities to interact with community members in authentic settings, they are learning how to participate, communicate, and build relationships in the world beyond our schools,” he said.

Melhado and Avondale firefighters arranged the return visit after the class participated in a similar experience last year.

During the October 6 program, students met firefighters, explored the station and participated in activities designed to encourage interaction with emergency personnel.

The visits also provide first responders with opportunities to establish relationships with students and families in the communities they serve.

“Our community is an extension of our classroom,” Ubbens said. “Partnerships like this help our students see themselves as valued members of the community while helping the community get to know and appreciate our students.”

The district incorporates community participation into its Life Skills instruction to help students strengthen abilities they can use in everyday situations, including communicating with others, adapting to different environments and developing confidence outside school.
