WEST GROVE, PA — Avon Grove High School recently celebrated 25 of its seniors for achieving the prestigious Pennsylvania Seal of Biliteracy, an award granted to students who showcase proficiency in English and at least one additional language. The recognition underscores the students’ commitment to academic excellence and cultural literacy.
“The Pennsylvania Seal of Biliteracy is more than a recognition of language proficiency,” said Dr. Scott DeShong, superintendent of Avon Grove School District. “It is a testament to our students’ commitment to excellence and their desire to engage with the world beyond our classrooms.”
Established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the seal emphasizes the value of multilingualism in today’s interconnected world. To qualify, students must demonstrate Intermediate High-level proficiency or higher in both English and a partner language across speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills using state-approved assessments. This year’s awardees represent a variety of languages, reflecting the district’s diverse linguistic community.
“These students embody the Profile of a Future Ready Avon Grove Graduate,” noted Emlyn Frangiosa, supervisor of teaching and learning for the district. “They have not only mastered multiple languages but have also embraced the skills necessary to succeed in a global society.”
The students were honored during the Senior Awards Night event at the high school, where they received an official seal on their diplomas and transcripts, signifying their achievement. The Seal of Biliteracy is designed to provide these young adults with a competitive edge in college admissions, career readiness, and participation in global communities.
