MEDIA, PA — The familiar experience of scrolling through an endless mix of news, art and online images is moving from smartphone screens to gallery walls this fall as Delaware County Community College welcomes artist Meredith Sellers for its annual contemporary exhibition.

“Meredith Sellers: Window/Frame” will run Oct. 26 through Dec. 4 at the Art Gallery at DCCC on the college’s Marple Campus. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

The show explores Sellers’ decade-long examination of the window as an artistic, physical and increasingly digital space.

The concept reaches back centuries. European Renaissance artists compared paintings to windows through which viewers could perceive the world. Sellers connects that tradition with the modern “windows” people carry in their pockets — smartphones that offer a constant stream of photographs, news, advertisements and other visual information.

Sellers creates paintings sized to replicate specific windows from her daily life, then layers them with rectangular fragments of art historical images, news media and stock photography.

The pieces are arranged across the compositions like pop-up advertisements, echoing the visual overload of social media feeds and internet searches. Rather than presenting those seemingly unrelated images as a single narrative, Sellers invites viewers to make connections and imagine conversations between them.

The exhibition is curated by Olivia Gruber Florek, Ph.D., DCCC professor of art history.

Visitors will have an opportunity to hear directly from Sellers during a special Artist Talk and Reception on Thursday, Nov. 5.

The Artist Talk will begin at 4 p.m. in the Large Auditorium in the Academic Building on the Marple Campus, followed by an Exhibition Reception in the Art Gallery. Light refreshments will be served.

For those unable to attend in person, the Artist Talk will also be streamed on Zoom. The talk and reception are free and open to the public, with registration information available at dccc.edu/gallery.
