DOWNINGTOWN, PA — B. Reed Henderson High School captured the Chester County Academic Competition championship on Tuesday, March 24, edging out top teams in a tightly contested final to earn a $2,000 scholarship and a spot at the state competition.
The annual event, organized by the Chester County Intermediate Unit, brought together 24 schools for an evening of fast-paced academic competition, where students demonstrated knowledge, teamwork, and quick thinking in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
The excitement began with the Junior Varsity division, where Conestoga High School outpaced Downingtown STEM Academy and Unionville High School to secure the JV championship.
In the varsity finals, the energy inside the room remained high as Henderson faced off against Unionville High School and Downingtown STEM Academy. In a match that came down to the final moments, Henderson pulled ahead by a narrow margin to claim the county title.
As county champions, Henderson’s varsity team earned a $2,000 scholarship funded by Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union. Downingtown STEM Academy received a $1,000 scholarship, while Unionville High School was awarded $500.
Student competitor Kyle Meade of Henderson emphasized the importance of preparation and teamwork in achieving success.
“Make sure to stick with it and keep going to practices and take notes on new information to learn more,” Meade said. “Doing something small every day to help increase your knowledge adds up over the course of a season, and working together with your team helps everyone improve.”
Jay Della Ragione, special events coordinator for the CCIU, said the competition continues to highlight the strengths of local students.
“What makes the Chester County Academic Competition so special isn’t just the competition itself; it’s what it reveals about our students,” he said. “They come together to showcase the critical thinking, teamwork, and genuine passion for learning that make Chester County’s schools something to be proud of.”
