COATESVILLE, PA — Students and staff at the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) Learning Center came together on October 28 to host their first annual National First Responders Day celebration, recognizing the bravery and service of local fire and EMS personnel.

Representatives from the Coatesville, Thorndale, Minquas, and Caln Township fire departments attended the event, which featured a luncheon prepared and organized by CCIU students. The program highlighted the ongoing partnership between first responders and the educational community they serve.

“It was our school’s honor to celebrate the first responders who tirelessly provide their time and services to best support our students and staff,” said Joe Lentz, dean of students at the CCIU Learning Center. “This luncheon was a small token of appreciation, knowing they all deserve so much more. We look forward to continuing this celebration annually.”

Jim Lentz, Coatesville Battalion Chief and brother of Joe Lentz, praised the effort behind the event. “Our shift had an amazing lunch and particularly enjoyed the opportunity to network with the students and staff,” he said. “We appreciate the team of staff members who put in a tremendous amount of effort every day. We should be honoring them, as they make our job look easy.”

Students from the Culinary, Horticulture, and Hospitality programs helped organize and execute the celebration, preparing food, floral arrangements, and decorations that created a welcoming and festive atmosphere.

The event served as both a tribute to local emergency personnel and a reflection of community unity—underscoring how education and public service can come together to build a safer, stronger Coatesville.
