PHILADELPHIA, PA — Big ideas, bold questions, and global voices are coming to the heart of Philadelphia as the city prepares to host a one-day event focused on the future of democracy.

TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures will take over the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, June 13, bringing together thinkers, leaders, and innovators from around the world for a series of original talks and interactive experiences. Timed to coincide with America’s 250th anniversary, the event places Philadelphia—long known as the birthplace of modern democracy—at the center of a forward-looking conversation about what comes next.

Rather than simply reflecting on history, organizers say the event is designed to challenge how people think about civic participation, public discourse, and the systems that shape everyday life.

“Philadelphia is where democracy was born, but its future is still being written,” said Angela Val, president and CEO of Visit Philadelphia. “It’s an opportunity to engage, question and reimagine the kind of democracy we want to build together for the next 250 years.”

A Day of Ideas and Conversation

The day-long program will feature more than 15 original TED Talks on the Marian Anderson Hall stage, covering topics that span media literacy, economic equity, artificial intelligence, race, and civic engagement.

The event will be co-hosted by Scott Shigeoka, creator of The Curiosity Mobile, and Kelly Stoetzel, a longtime TED curator known for shaping global conversations through storytelling and live events.

Among the featured speakers are authors, researchers, civic leaders, and journalists from across the United States and beyond, each bringing a different perspective on how democratic systems can evolve in a rapidly changing world.

“TED has always been a platform for ideas that shape the world, and there is no better place to stage a global conversation about the future of democracy than Philadelphia,” said Laura Beyer, TED’s head of partnerships.

More Than a Stage

Beyond the main talks, the event is designed to be immersive.

Attendees will be able to participate in small-group sessions focused on developing civic ideas, explore interactive installations, and connect in shared spaces throughout the venue. The Kimmel Center will transform into a “Public Square,” featuring local food and drink, a bookstore, and live interviews and performances on the PEW Spotlight Stage.

A dedicated lounge space will also offer a quieter environment for reflection and conversation.

The event is supported by a range of regional and national partners, including major institutions, local organizations, and Philadelphia’s hospitality community.

A Broader Philadelphia Experience

Visitors traveling to the city for the event can also take advantage of a special overnight hotel package offered through Visit Philadelphia, which includes parking and access to several regional attractions.

In addition, a “Dear Democracy” sweepstakes is offering a chance to win a Philadelphia getaway, including event tickets, dining experiences, and museum access.
