MEMPHIS, TN — Violent crime in Memphis has dropped sharply following a federal task force launched in 2025, according to the White House, as President Donald J. Trump visited Memphis, Tennessee, on Monday to highlight the reported results.

What This Means for You

  • Federal intervention in Memphis is tied to significant reported crime reductions
  • More than 7,400 arrests and over 1,200 illegal firearms seizures were reported
  • Debate continues over whether the strategy or broader trends drove the decline

The Memphis Safe Task Force, created by presidential memorandum in September 2025, combines federal, state, and local law enforcement resources, including the FBI, U.S. Marshals, Tennessee Highway Patrol, and Memphis Police Department.

A key component of the effort includes Tennessee National Guard members supporting law enforcement operations after being deputized by U.S. Marshals.

Reported Crime Reductions

According to the White House, overall crime in Memphis has declined by more than 43% compared to the same period last year.

Officials reported declines across several categories, including motor vehicle thefts down 67%, robberies down 51%, sexual assaults down 38%, homicides down 35%, burglaries down 32%, and aggravated assaults down 31%.

The administration also reported more than 7,400 arrests tied to offenses including homicide, gang activity, and drug trafficking, along with the seizure of 1,219 illegal firearms.

In addition, officials said 150 missing children were located during the operation.

Federal Approach and Strategy

The task force was designed as a multi-agency response to high levels of violent crime, using coordinated enforcement and increased law enforcement presence.

“The results are undeniable — proof that strong leadership, tough enforcement, and zero tolerance for criminals deliver real public safety,” the White House said in a statement.

President Donald J. Trump highlighted the initiative during his visit, describing it as a model for other cities.

Ongoing Debate Over Effectiveness

While federal officials credit the task force with driving the reduction in crime, some civil liberties groups and local residents have raised concerns about aggressive policing tactics, including increased stops and enforcement activity.

Critics have also questioned whether the decline in crime is solely attributable to the task force or part of a broader downward trend that began prior to the federal intervention.

No vote or formal legislative action is associated with the initiative, which was established through executive authority.

Next Steps

The administration has indicated it may continue or expand similar task force models in other cities.
