CECILTON, MD — The Upper Bay Ruritan Club, a long-standing champion of youth and community development, honored Bohemia Manor High School graduates this week during its annual October meeting, recognizing recipients of scholarships supporting their studies at Cecil College.
Over the past two decades, the civic organization has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to local students pursuing higher education. “As a civic club, we want to invest in the young people within the community,” said Upper Bay Ruritan Club President Jeremy Rothwell. “Hopefully they will return after college to do great things in their careers. We look at students as the next generation that will carry on this good work for future generations.”
This year’s recipients are pursuing degrees in nursing, elementary education, and general studies. Among them is sophomore Addie Sample, who is completing her prerequisites to apply for Cecil College’s nursing program in January. “I had the opportunity to shadow my friend’s mom, an X-ray technician at Christiana Care Hospital, and that’s when I knew I wanted to work in a hospital environment,” she said.
Freshman Kayla Proctor shared how her general studies coursework helped her discover an interest in photography, while also considering a possible career in healthcare. “At first, I didn’t think I would like the photography course, but I just love everything about it,” she said.
Cecil College President Dr. Mary Way Bolt praised the club’s decades-long commitment to student success. “The Upper Bay Ruritans have generously supported our college for many years, making a significant impact in the lives of our students,” Bolt said.
Through organizations like the Upper Bay Ruritan Club, the Cecil College Foundation awards more than $500,000 in scholarships each year.
The club’s next fundraising event, its annual Spaghetti Dinner, will take place on Saturday, November 1, at the Hacks Point Fire Company in Earleville. Proceeds will support future scholarships for local students.
