CHESTER, PA — Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred late Wednesday night after Chester police officers encountered an armed suspect while responding to an unrelated call.
According to the Chester Police Department, the incident happened on August 20, 2025, at approximately 11:35 p.m. in the 100 block of West 21st Street. Officers in the area reportedly heard multiple gunshots and moved toward the source of the gunfire.
Investigators say the officers encountered an armed suspect who was allegedly discharging a firearm in their direction. Several officers returned fire, striking the suspect and ending the immediate threat.
The suspect, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, was transported to Christiana Hospital for treatment. Authorities report that no officers or community members were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
In keeping with department policy, the officers who discharged their service weapons have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office Special Investigations Unit is leading the inquiry into the incident.
Interim Police Commissioner Katrina Blackwell expressed relief that no bystanders or officers were harmed, emphasizing the inherent risks law enforcement officers face in the line of duty.
Authorities remind the public that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
