NEW GARDEN, PA — The Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association (PHBA) is set to host the state’s first-ever Pennsylvania Yearling Show, an event aimed at promoting Pennsylvania-bred thoroughbreds and the state’s equine industry. The show, which is free and open to the public, will take place this Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brandywine Polo Club in New Garden, PA.

The event will feature Pennsylvania-bred yearlings competing for over $5,000 in prizes and awards. Horses will be divided into four classes based on sex and whether they were sired by a Pennsylvania stallion. Judging criteria will include physical conformation and racing suitability. The top two horses from each class will advance to the championship round. Additionally, “best turnout” awards will be given in each class, evaluating grooming, coat condition, and overall appearance.

“We created the Pennsylvania Yearling Show as a way to showcase our Pennsylvania-bred thoroughbreds and generate interest in horse breeding here in the Commonwealth,” said Brian Sanfratello, Executive Secretary of the PHBA. Sanfratello expressed hope that this inaugural event will grow into an annual tradition, drawing greater attention and participation in the years to come.

The judging will be led by Russell Jones, a respected breeder, member of the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission, and former head of the PHBA. Winners in each category will receive trophies and ribbons.

To cap off the day, a “Starlight Polo” match will be held at the polo grounds at 6 p.m., offering additional entertainment for attendees.

The Pennsylvania Yearling Show marks an important effort to highlight the state’s equine industry and offer a family-friendly experience celebrating the sport and culture of horse breeding.
