PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is set to begin construction on a new roundabout at the intersection of Castor Avenue and Wyoming Avenue in Philadelphia, with work starting Monday, May 12.
From May 12 through May 29, lane closures with flagging are scheduled on Castor Avenue between Orthodox Street and Wingohocking Street, operating weekdays between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Motorists are encouraged to plan extra travel time through the area, as traffic delays are expected.
The $5.1 million project will bring a redesigned roundabout to improve traffic flow and safety. The upgrades include narrowing roadway layouts to slow vehicle speeds and implementing ADA-compliant sidewalks and crossings. The plan also features bike ramps for safer cyclist navigation, improved transit stops, and relocated trolley infrastructure.
Additionally, green stormwater systems, including a water quality chamber and updated stormwater sewers, will be installed to better manage runoff and reduce impacts on Frankford Creek. Milling and overlaying of pavement will minimize construction disruptions while enhancing road durability.
Road-Con, Inc., located in West Chester, PA, will oversee the federally funded project, which is expected to provide lasting safety and infrastructure improvements to this busy intersection.
