HARRISBURG, PA — Following an attempted arson and homicide attack at the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence, the Department of General Services (DGS) has announced an aggressive timeline to restore the historic home to full operation. Governor Josh Shapiro has tasked DGS with expediting the process to ensure the safety and functionality of the residence for his family, staff, and the citizens of Pennsylvania.

“At the direction of Governor Shapiro, DGS is working closely with the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) to restore the Governor’s Residence to full operation to ensure the Governor and his family, residence staff, and Pennsylvanians can return to the building quickly and safely,” said DGS Secretary Reggie McNeil.

The restoration effort involves round-the-clock work by staff and contractors. According to McNeil, both the living quarters and workspace at the residence are expected to be fully operational within a few days.

While restoration remains the immediate focus, plans are also underway to evaluate and potentially enhance the building’s security and safety features. McNeil emphasized the critical collaboration between DGS and PSP in ensuring long-term safety following the attack.

The Governor’s Residence stands as a historic symbol of public service in Pennsylvania, and DGS assured steady updates on its progress. “The residence is a historic symbol of public service in Pennsylvania — and we are fully committed to restoring it quickly and safely,” McNeil stated.

This incident has underscored the importance of securing vital state assets while balancing continued public accessibility. Looking forward, the Shapiro Administration remains committed to preserving the residence’s functionality and heritage for years to come.
