The wait is finally over. After weeks of mock drafts and swirling rumors, Philadelphia ended the speculation on draft night by selecting Baylor standout VJ Edgecombe with the No. 3 overall pick.
Originally from The Bahamas, the 19-year-old freshman averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game last season. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 193 pounds, Edgecombe brings a blend of athleticism, versatility, and upside to Philadelphia’s roster.
With the addition of Edgecombe, Philadelphia is hoping that—combined with a healthy roster—this is exactly what the team needs to return to the playoffs and compete for a title. Anything to help erase the memory of last season’s disappointment.
Despite entering last season as a top-five title contender according to Las Vegas preseason odds, the Sixers stumbled to a 24–58 record—the fifth-worst in the league. Offensively, they struggled across the board, ranking 26th in points per game (109.6), 30th in rebounds (39.8), and 29th in assists (23.2).
Injuries played a major role in the team’s collapse, as Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey—the Sixers’ ‘Big Three’—managed to appear in just 15 games together throughout the season.
The Sixers also hold the 35th overall pick in the second round, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 26.
