Few honors could be more fitting: on Thursday morning, Phillies ace Zack Wheeler was named the National League Pitcher of the Month for June—an outcome that seemed all but inevitable.
In five starts, the 35-year-old right-hander delivered a superb 2-1 record paired with an exceptional 0.58 ERA, underscoring his dominance throughout the month. Over 31 innings, he struck out 42 batters, further cementing his remarkable run.
As Todd Zolecki of MLB.com highlighted, adding valuable historical context, “Since 1912, he is only the fourth Phillies pitcher to post a 0.60 ERA or under with 30 or more innings pitched in a month, joining Cliff Lee (0.21 ERA in June 2011 and 0.45 ERA in August 2011), Tommy Greene (0.29 ERA in May 1991) and Lee Meadows (0.23 ERA in July 1919).”
Wheeler previously captured Pitcher of the Month honors in May 2022, the only other time in his career he has received the award.
With this latest honor, fans will eagerly await to see whether Wheeler gets the call to start the All-Star Game on July 15.
