LOWER OXFORD TWP, PA — Traffic is moving again in southern Chester County after U.S. 1 North and the Route 10 overpass reopened earlier than expected following an emergency bridge repair prompted by a major truck strike Friday morning.
According to PennDOT, both U.S. 1 North (Kennett Oxford Bypass) and Route 10 (Limestone Road) were shut down after a large truck collided with the overhead Route 10 bridge, causing significant structural damage. The shutdown forced thousands of drivers to divert onto local roads, creating widespread congestion across Lower Oxford Township.
PennDOT’s contractor, J.D. Eckman, Inc., worked through the weekend to replace a damaged bridge beam and concrete barrier before restriping and reopening the structure. The quick turnaround restored two critical arteries that together move nearly 18,000 vehicles per day.
The Route 10 bridge, built in 1968, carries roughly 9,000 vehicles daily, while U.S. 1 North handles approximately 8,600 in the affected segment. Officials said the emergency work was necessary to ensure the bridge remained safe for motorists.
Drivers are encouraged to stay alert for residual delays as traffic patterns stabilize.
