WEST MARLBOROUGH, PA — Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Mike Carroll joined local officials on Tuesday, June 10, to celebrate the early completion of a $1.3 million project to replace the Route 82 (Doe Run Road) bridge over Doe Run in Chester County. Initially scheduled for reopening in September, the project concluded three months ahead of schedule, highlighting the efficiency and dedication of the teams involved.
“I am thrilled to announce the early completion of this bridge, which was made possible through the collaborative efforts of our dedicated state and local partners,” said Secretary Carroll. “This structure not only enhances the landscape but also symbolizes our unwavering commitment to public safety. Safe and reliable infrastructure is crucial for our communities, and this bridge highlights PennDOT’s ongoing mission to replace aging, structurally deficient bridges with modern, resilient designs.”
Dating back to 1932, the bridge carried approximately 4,881 vehicles daily, nine percent of which were trucks. It was closed in November 2024 following inspections that revealed significant deterioration in its steel beams and open grid deck, resulting in weight restrictions of 15 tons.
The replacement project, carried out by Loftus Construction Inc. of King of Prussia, involved the installation of a wider concrete bridge deck for improved safety and capacity. Additional enhancements included better stormwater drainage, resurfaced approach roadways, updated signage, and pavement markings. Aesthetic elements such as brown-painted steel beams and guiderails were also added to harmonize with the surrounding Doe Run historic district.
The project required close collaboration with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) to ensure compliance with safety and preservation standards.
“The bridge’s early reopening reflects the dedication and teamwork of all involved,” said PennDOT District 6 Executive Din Abazi. “Their tireless commitment ensured this vital structure was restored safely and ahead of schedule.”
The newly updated bridge provides a critical connection for local residents and businesses, enhancing travel safety and reliability for years to come. Its completion underscores PennDOT’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and addressing community needs promptly and effectively.
