CHESTER COUNTY, PA — Drivers traveling U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) through southern Chester County should prepare for overnight delays next week as PennDOT advances a major highway improvement project in Kennett and East Marlborough townships.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that overhead sign installation will take place Thursday, February 19, and Friday, February 20, under a $10.4 million effort to widen and modernize a 1.3-mile stretch of U.S. 1 from the Kennett Oxford Bypass to Greenwood Road.
Weather permitting, periodic 15-minute traffic stoppages will occur in both directions between Schoolhouse Road and the Kennett Oxford Bypass (U.S. 1) from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following mornings. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time as backups and delays may develop during the temporary stoppages.
The sign installation is part of a broader reconstruction initiative designed to reshape the corridor. Under the project, PennDOT’s contractor will mill and overlay the roadway, construct a third travel lane in certain sections in each direction, and use existing shoulders and right-turn lanes to create a third lane for the remainder of the corridor. Improvements also include new sidewalks along the north side of U.S. 1 from Schoolhouse Road to the Longwood Village Shopping Center entrance, elimination of the left-turn movement from Orchard Avenue onto U.S. 1, installation of two Dynamic Message Signs, and upgrades to five signalized intersections.
Allan Myers, LP, of Worcester, Montgomery County, is serving as the general contractor. The project is financed entirely with federal funds.
With heavy traffic volumes routinely moving through the U.S. 1 corridor, overnight stoppages can ripple across surrounding roadways. Drivers are encouraged to monitor conditions and plan accordingly.
