Boot Road Bridge in Chester County to Close for Yearlong Replacement Project

Traffic alert, expect delays

EAST CALN TWP, PA — Boot Road in East Caln Township will close for about a year starting Monday, September 8, as crews replace the bridge that carries the roadway over Amtrak rail lines, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced.

The $13.3 million project will shut down Boot Road around the clock between Quarry Road and Southwind Lane until mid-September 2026. Traffic will be detoured to Quarry Road, Business U.S. 30 (Lincoln Highway/Lancaster Avenue), and U.S. 322 (Brandywine Avenue). Local access for residents and businesses will be maintained.

PennDOT cautioned drivers to allow extra time when traveling near the construction zone, noting that delays and congestion are expected. All work is weather dependent. Rail service on Amtrak’s Keystone Line and SEPTA’s Paoli/Thorndale Line is expected to continue without interruption.

The project will replace the 59-year-old, three-span bridge with a 105-foot single-span structure while maintaining the existing 38-foot width. Work will also include resurfacing, stormwater upgrades, guiderail installation, and raising the roadway slightly to improve clearance for Amtrak’s facilities. The catenary system, which powers trains, will be reconfigured beneath the new bridge.

Additional improvements will be made at the nearby Boot Road and Quarry Road intersection. Plans call for widening to add left-turn lanes on three approaches, installing new traffic signals, and enhancing drainage.
