PAOLI, PA — A long-anticipated safety improvement project along Route 23 in Chester County will move forward this summer, backed by $2.51 million in federal funding, State Rep. Melissa Shusterman, D-Chester, announced.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will lead the project, which includes significant intersection upgrades. Plans call for signal enhancements, road widening, and restriping on eastbound Route 23 at Township Line Road to create a dedicated left-turn lane. Crews will also mill and repave the intersection.
At the nearby junction of Route 23 (Nutt Road) and Route 113 (Bridge Street), the project will remove existing median islands and reconfigure the layout within the current road footprint, followed by milling and resurfacing.
Shusterman emphasized the long-standing community demand for improvements. “The people of Schuylkill Township have been looking forward to these improvements for a long time,” she said. “Route 23 has been left neglected for far too long. I am relieved that these federal funds were secured and look forward to the people of Chester County benefiting from these safer roads at no additional cost to them.”
Construction is expected to begin this summer, with completion scheduled for fall 2026. The initiative is funded entirely through previously awarded federal dollars, ensuring no additional local tax burden.
