Vishay Sensor Wins Global Award, Setting New Benchmark for Automotive Light Sensing

Vishay Intertechnology

MALVERN, PAVishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) said its VEML4031X00 ambient light sensor has been recognized with a 2025 AspenCore World Electronics Achievement Award in the Sensor category, marking a milestone for automotive-grade sensing technology.

The VEML4031X00 stood out as the industry’s first AEC-Q100 qualified rectangular ambient light sensor, combining an ambient light sensor and a highly sensitive infrared photodiode in an ultra-low-profile surface-mount package. At 4.38 millimeters by 1.45 millimeters with a height of just 0.6 millimeters, the device addresses growing demand for compact, high-performance components in space-constrained automotive designs.

The World Electronics Achievement Awards, presented by AspenCore, honor innovation across the global electronics industry. Winners are selected by senior industry analysts and engineers worldwide through a combination of expert review and online voting. Vishay’s sensor was cited for performance and design advantages in a highly competitive field.

Designed for modern vehicle interiors, the VEML4031X00 offers half the width of previous-generation solutions, enabling easier integration into bezel-less displays and other compact applications. Its spectral sensitivity closely matches that of the human eye, supporting accurate light measurement, while a dedicated infrared channel allows differentiation between light sources. The sensor operates across a wide ambient light range, from near darkness to full daylight, without saturation.

The device is rated for automotive environments, with an operating temperature range from minus 40 degrees Celsius to plus 110 degrees Celsius. Vishay said the sensor is optimized for applications including display backlight control, infotainment systems, rearview mirror dimming, interior lighting, and heads-up displays. It supports I²C communication, includes an interrupt function, and is designed for low power consumption.
