WEST CHESTER, PAState Representative Chris Pielli, D-Chester, received the Environmental Leadership Award from the West Chester Green Team on Monday night, recognizing his legislative work to reduce light pollution and protect the health of both people and wildlife.

The West Chester Green Team, a civic organization focused on environmental education and community sustainability, presents the award annually to individuals who demonstrate leadership in advancing environmental protection. Last year’s recipient was State Senator Carolyn Comitta, D-Chester, honored for her legislation safeguarding Pennsylvania’s state insect, the firefly.

Pielli was recognized for his sponsorship of House Bill 969, which aims to address the growing problem of light pollution. “The detrimental effects of light pollution extend beyond an artificial skyglow to adverse effects on the health of both humans and other living organisms,” Pielli said. He added that artificial light disrupts circadian rhythms and has been linked to higher risks of breast and prostate cancer, as well as harmful impacts on wildlife, including disoriented migratory birds and hatchling sea turtles.

Following the award presentation by West Chester University Professor Marc Gagne, Pielli participated in a panel discussion on preserving dark skies and promoting responsible lighting practices.

The issue carries particular relevance for Chester County, where suburban growth and commercial development continue to expand. Communities like West Chester, Exton, and Downingtown have seen an increase in both residential lighting and large-scale retail illumination, contributing to regional light pollution that affects human sleep patterns, wildlife habitats, and visibility of the night sky.

Local environmental groups have called for coordinated action among municipalities, citing the benefits of shielded lighting, reduced nighttime signage brightness, and improved energy efficiency through LED technology. Pielli’s legislative focus reflects a growing recognition that sustainable lighting policies are not only environmentally responsible but also essential to maintaining Chester County’s quality of life and ecological balance.
