WILMINGTON, DE — An 18-year-old Wilmington man is facing multiple firearm-related charges after police say he fled from officers during an early morning encounter on Tuesday.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, the incident occurred on August 12 at approximately 12:38 a.m. when officers patrolling near 6th and North Van Buren Streets attempted to stop a man allegedly operating an electric scooter illegally.
Police allege the individual, identified as Antwain Canty, abandoned the scooter and ran from the scene. During the pursuit, officers say Canty removed a firearm from his waistband. Additional units responded and apprehended him without further incident in the 200 block of North Harrison Street.
Investigators report recovering a loaded .45-caliber handgun equipped with a laser attachment.
Canty has been charged with possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and resisting arrest. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $31,001 cash-only bail.
Police remind the public that a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
