WILMINGTON, DE — A 19-year-old Wilmington man has been arrested in connection with a recent shots fired incident and is now facing a series of serious criminal charges after police reportedly recovered a loaded handgun, ammunition, and illegal drugs.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of North Pine Street at approximately 2:57 a.m. on July 23, 2025, following reports of gunfire. No injuries were reported at the scene.
An investigation by the Crime Gun Intelligence Center led detectives to identify Cornell Clifton as a suspect. The following day, on July 24 at approximately 1:28 p.m., police located Clifton in the 4000 block of DuPont Highway and took him into custody without incident.
During the arrest, investigators reportedly recovered a loaded 9mm handgun with an extended magazine, .40-caliber ammunition, and 220 grams of marijuana. Police also noted that Clifton was wanted in connection with an unrelated matter at the time of his arrest.
Clifton has been charged with the following offenses:
- First-Degree Reckless Endangering
- Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Prohibited – Three Counts
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
- Possession of a Controlled Substance in Tier 1 Quantity
He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $40,000 cash-only bail.
