CLAYMONT, DE — Delaware State Police have arrested a Wilmington man in connection with an alleged attempted robbery outside a Claymont business early Wednesday morning.
According to authorities, 37-year-old Leroy Buchanan is accused of attempting to steal a woman’s suitcase and assaulting her during the incident. The events unfolded around 5:41 a.m. on July 23 outside the Dunkin’ Donuts located at 3224 Philadelphia Pike.
Investigators say the woman had placed her suitcase on the ground when a male suspect, later identified as Buchanan, allegedly grabbed the item. The victim reportedly confronted the suspect and managed to retrieve her belongings. However, Buchanan is alleged to have followed the woman inside the store, where he began striking her and attempted to pull her back outside while demanding the suitcase.
Despite the alleged physical confrontation, the victim was not injured, and the suspect fled the scene on foot without obtaining the property, police said.
Responding troopers initiated a search and located a man matching the suspect’s description walking along Philadelphia Pike. He was identified as Buchanan and taken into custody without incident.
Buchanan was transported to Troop 1, where he was charged with attempted robbery in the second degree, a felony, and offensive touching. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on a $2,500 unsecured bond.
It is important to note that all charges are allegations. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The case remains under investigation.
