UPDATE: Infant Remains in ICU as Father Denied Bail in Stabbing Case

COATESVILLE, PA — A 3-month-old infant remains in intensive care as authorities confirm the child’s father has been denied bail following an alleged stabbing inside a Coatesville apartment Wednesday morning.

According to an updated release from the Coatesville Police Department Detective Unit, officers were dispatched at approximately 11:36 a.m. on February 11, 2026, to the 2000 block of Smithbridge Drive for a reported stabbing involving an infant.

Upon arrival, officers took 44-year-old Michael Phillips into custody. Police allege Phillips stabbed his 3-month-old child in the abdomen inside the apartment. Authorities further allege that after the stabbing, he carried the infant outside and threw the child into the snow.

The infant, described as being in very serious condition at the scene, was flown to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In the latest update, police report the baby remains in intensive care and is listed in critical but stable condition.

Phillips was arraigned Thursday morning before District Judge Gregory Hines and was denied bail. He is being held at Chester County Prison pending a preliminary hearing.

The investigation remains active under reference number 16-26-06851 and is being handled by the department’s Detective Unit.

The allegations outlined by investigators remain under review. As with all criminal proceedings, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
