Unconscious Driver on I-95 Found with Huge Drug Haul, Police Say

NEWARK, DEDelaware State Police have arrested a Rhode Island man on multiple felony drug charges following a traffic stop on Interstate 95 early Sunday morning.

The arrest occurred on May 11, 2025, at approximately 1:39 a.m., when a trooper on routine patrol encountered a stationary black Subaru Crosstrek blocking a southbound traffic lane near Salem Church Road. Upon approaching the vehicle, the trooper observed the driver, identified as 52-year-old Christopher Keough of Warwick, Rhode Island, appearing unconscious and holding drug paraphernalia.

The trooper was able to wake Keough without incident and proceeded to conduct a traffic stop investigation. During the encounter, the trooper reported observing signs of impairment and conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. A subsequent search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered a significant quantity of narcotics and drug-related materials, including the following items:

  • Approximately 15.35 grams of suspected fentanyl
  • Approximately 28.38 grams of crack cocaine
  • Approximately 2.97 grams of cocaine
  • Three pills identified as alprazolam
  • A digital scale and packaging materials used for drug distribution

Keough was transported to Troop 2, where he was formally charged with multiple offenses, including two counts of Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance Tier 3 Quantity (Felony) and two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance Tier 3 Quantity (Felony). Additional charges included DUI and traffic violations.

He was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington on an $85,125 secured bond.

Authorities confirm that the investigation remains ongoing.

It is important to note that Christopher Keough, like all defendants, is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
