Trooper Fatally Shot During Traffic Stop in Chester County

WEST CALN TWP, PA — A Pennsylvania State Police trooper was fatally shot Sunday night during a traffic stop in western Chester County, according to state police.

Authorities identified the trooper as Corporal Timothy O’Connor, a 16-year veteran assigned to the Embreeville Barracks (Troop J).

State police said O’Connor responded around 8:15 p.m. Sunday, March 8, to a report of an erratic driver. Investigators reported that about 10 minutes later he initiated a traffic stop near Compass and Michael roads in West Caln Township, near the Honey Brook Township border.

According to investigators, as O’Connor approached the vehicle, the driver allegedly opened fire, fatally wounding the trooper.

Police reported the suspect, described as a 32-year-old Chester County man, died by suicide at the scene following the shooting. Authorities have not yet publicly released the suspect’s name.

The Chester County District Attorney’s Office and Pennsylvania State Police are conducting a joint investigation. Officials said the case remains active as detectives continue to review evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Governor Josh Shapiro ordered Commonwealth flags to fly at half-staff in O’Connor’s honor. Following the incident, local departments, including the Parkesburg Borough Police Department, announced memorial areas for residents to pay their respects.

According to state officials, O’Connor enlisted with the Pennsylvania State Police in 2010. He is survived by his wife and a young daughter.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be coordinated through the Pennsylvania State Troopers Association in the coming days.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
