NEWARK, DE — Two 16-year-olds are charged in connection with an alleged armed robbery and stolen vehicle investigation earlier this week, according to the Newark Police Department.
Police said officers responded at approximately 5 p.m. February 16 to the 900 block of Wharton Drive for a report of a robbery.
According to police, the victim told officers he had been robbed at gunpoint by an acquaintance and the acquaintance’s friend, who had been inside his apartment earlier that day. The victim alleged that after he asked the suspect to leave, one of the suspects produced a handgun and struck him multiple times, causing minor injuries. The victim declined medical treatment, police said.
Authorities allege the suspects took the victim’s property, including vehicle keys, and fled the area in the victim’s vehicle at approximately 4:15 p.m.
Detectives identified the suspects as a 16-year-old male and a 16-year-old female and obtained arrest warrants, according to police.
On February 18, officers located the 16-year-old female inside the stolen vehicle and took her into custody, police said. She was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the New Castle County Juvenile Detention Center on $42,100 cash bail.
On February 20, the 16-year-old male was taken into custody at Newark Police Headquarters when he arrived to speak with detectives, according to police. He was arraigned in New Castle County Family Court and released on $20,000 unsecured bail.
Both juveniles are charged with first-degree robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, theft of a motor vehicle, second-degree conspiracy and criminal mischief under $1,500, police said.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
