NEWARK, DE — A 17-year-old male has been charged following a stabbing involving a rideshare driver early Saturday morning, according to Newark police.
Police reported the incident occurred March 14 at approximately 12:01 a.m. in a business parking lot in the 100 block of Grove Lane.
According to investigators, the victim was working as a rideshare driver and had picked up the suspect, with Grove Lane listed as the destination. Police said that at the conclusion of the ride, the suspect, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, allegedly produced a knife and began stabbing the driver.
Investigators reported the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim in the neck and back of the head, then ordered him out of the vehicle and continued the attack. Police said the victim defended himself, prompting the suspect to flee the area on foot.
According to authorities, the victim drove away and contacted police. He sustained injuries to the neck, shoulder, back, and hand and was transported to a local hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition.
Police stated that detectives identified a suspect through the investigation. Members of the Newark Police Department SWAT team and Criminal Investigations Division served a warrant at a residence within Newark, where the 17-year-old male was taken into custody without incident, according to police.
The suspect has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted first-degree robbery, and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, police reported. Authorities said the suspect is awaiting arraignment in Justice of the Peace Court 11.
