Teen Found With Stolen Car at Mall, Others Released

NEWARK, DE — A juvenile was taken into custody after police said he was found entering a vehicle reported stolen during a prior carjacking at Christiana Mall.

According to New Castle County Police, an officer on patrol at approximately 5:54 p.m. on March 21 located an unoccupied Nissan Rogue parked near Target at the mall.

Police reported the vehicle had been stolen during a carjacking on March 6 from the Sparrow Run Townhouse community.

According to investigators, while monitoring the vehicle, an officer observed a juvenile enter the driver’s seat. Authorities said the juvenile and three others with him were immediately detained.

Police identified the suspect as a 17-year-old male from Wilmington. The three other juveniles were later released without charges, according to authorities.

According to police, the 17-year-old was transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters and charged with one felony count of receiving stolen property over $1,500.

Authorities reported the juvenile was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on $1,500 secured bail.

Police noted the incident occurred shortly before an unrelated robbery at the mall later that evening, which is being investigated separately.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
