MIDDLETOWN, DE — A 19-year-old man from New Castle is facing multiple charges after he was allegedly caught attempting to steal a vehicle in broad daylight in a quiet residential area of Middletown, according to authorities.
The incident unfolded on the morning of Saturday, August 2, 2025, when patrol officers from the New Castle County Police Department’s B-Squad were dispatched to The Village of Bayberry South, responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle near the intersection of Astaire Place and Stravinsky Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 2024 Kia Forte that had reportedly been stolen overnight from another residence within the same neighborhood.
While investigating the recovered vehicle, officers received a second call from the nearby 2500 block of Chopin Drive. A resident reported that someone had just broken a window on a 2015 Kia Soul and appeared to be attempting to steal it.
Responding officers arrived at the second scene within moments and observed a man seated behind the wheel of the Kia Soul. He was identified as Ni’yione Carter, age 19, of New Castle. According to police, Carter was wearing a surgical mask and holding a screwdriver at the time he was taken into custody.
During a search of the area, officers reportedly found a credit card belonging to the owner of the previously stolen Kia Forte, located near the scene of Carter’s arrest.
Carter was transported to the New Castle County Police Headquarters, where he was formally charged with several offenses, including:
- One felony count of wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony,
- One felony count of possession of burglar tools,
- One felony count of attempted theft of a motor vehicle, and
- One misdemeanor count of criminal mischief, with damage valued between $1,000 and $5,000.
He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $4,500 unsecured bail.
At this time, all charges against Ni’yione Carter are considered allegations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
