NEWARK, DE — A 13-year-old male is facing multiple felony charges after police said he allegedly stole a vehicle early Wednesday and fled from officers before being taken into custody.
According to New Castle County Police, officers responded at approximately 12:55 a.m. February 25 to the Glendale Townhouses neighborhood for a report of a Hyundai Elantra that had just been stolen.
Police stated that officers searched the surrounding area and, at approximately 1:08 a.m., located the stolen Hyundai on Curlew Circle in the Sparrow Run neighborhood. The vehicle was occupied by a suspect.
Upon seeing a marked police vehicle, the suspect allegedly exited the Hyundai and fled on foot, police said. Officers pursued him and took him into custody without incident on Sir Thomas Lane in the Wellington Woods neighborhood.
Police identified the suspect as a 13-year-old male from Newark.
According to authorities, the juvenile was transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters and charged with one felony count of theft of a motor vehicle, one felony count of wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, one felony count of possession of burglary tools, one felony count of second-degree conspiracy, one misdemeanor count of resisting arrest and one misdemeanor count of criminal mischief under $1,000.
The teen was arraigned in New Castle County Family Court and released on $24,500 unsecured bail, police said.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
