NEWARK, DE — A proactive patrol by Newark police last week led to the arrest of a Wilmington woman after officers allege they discovered a stolen vehicle and uncovered multiple outstanding warrants from several jurisdictions.

According to the Newark Police Department, officers assigned to the Street Crimes Unit were patrolling the area of South College Avenue at approximately 6:15 p.m. on January 15 when they observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed through a business parking lot in the 1100 block of South College Avenue before entering the roadway near Welsh Tract Road.

Police said a registration check on the vehicle returned no record on file, prompting officers to initiate a traffic stop. The driver was identified as Raneesha Matthews, 22, of Wilmington.

During the investigation, officers allege they determined the vehicle had been reported stolen in New Castle County. Further checks revealed that Matthews allegedly had multiple active warrants and capiases issued by several law enforcement agencies.

Newark police charged Matthews with receiving stolen property with a value greater than $1,500, along with multiple traffic offenses. Authorities also reported that Matthews was wanted on additional matters, including one warrant issued by Capitol Police, two warrants from the Wilmington Police Department, and multiple capiases from other jurisdictions. All charges and allegations remain pending court review.
