WILMINGTON, DE — Wilmington Police arrested a 19-year-old man after officers recovered a stolen handgun during a street encounter on Thursday, marking the latest development in the city’s ongoing effort to curb gun crime.
Members of the Gun Intelligence Unit were patrolling the area of West 4th Street and Delamore Place at approximately 11:34 a.m. on December 4 when they made contact with Ollier Mays. Police say they recovered a loaded 9mm handgun with an obliterated serial number, and Mays was taken into custody without incident.
Investigators later confirmed that the weapon had been reported stolen out of Chester, Pennsylvania, adding another layer to the case as detectives continue tracing the firearm’s history.
Mays has been charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He was arraigned in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas and released on $10,000 unsecured bail.
Police say the Gun Intelligence Unit will continue its targeted operations as gun-related investigations remain a priority for the department.
A suspect, arrestee, or defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
